Coach Amorim Insists He Won't Walk Away at United but Accepts Sack Looms If Results Don't Improve
Ruben Amorim has made it clear that he not resign from his role in spite of the club's current difficulties, but he concedes that he faces the sack if results fail to turn around.
Current Challenges & Table Standing
Amorim has collected only thirty-four points in his 33 Premier League games, with Manchester United now placed 14th in the standings after a 15th-place finish the previous campaign. United have secured just two victories in the first seven fixtures of the season, which includes a shock Carabao Cup exit against Grimsby as well as last weekend's defeat to Brentford. That result prolonged the manager's quest to secure his first back-to-back Premier League victories after arriving nearly a year ago.
This Saturday, Sunderland FC will visit the Theatre of Dreams, where a further loss could heighten the pressure facing Amorim.
The Manager's Stance on Stepping Down
Questioned on if he would think about quitting, he stated: “No, that's a decision of the board. I won't do that. At times I get those thoughts and losing is hard, failing to build the momentum. It’s so frustrating when you create that momentum, heading into the following match, things go wrong. That emotion sometimes hurts me deeply. Also the players and above all the staff here. But it isn't my choice and I think it would be really hard to leave unless I don’t given everything to pursue my path at United.”
“It’s an honor to be here and I want to continue at the club and I want to fight for success. But the problem now that causes me suffer is to lose matches, not the fear of losing my job. You worry about losing your job when you have to pay expenses and I don’t feel that pressure.”
Defending the Formation System
Amorim additionally launched an impassioned defense of the three-at-the-back formation, that has been the focus for plenty of scrutiny. The coach has deployed the formation consistently yet it has so far failed to provide the consistency desired.
“No one at the club is foolish,” Amorim commented. “We understand that the team need results to advance the project. We will reach a point that is untenable for everyone because this is a massive club with many sponsors, under dual ownership. It's challenging, managing expectations is really hard. What I want is to see my team – in victory or defeat – playing consistently but we're failing to do that.”
Amorim pointed out that United used various formations under previous managers, also without success. “We must to play with consistency, with equal power, with matching energy, with the same concentration. Should we achieve that, it doesn’t matter what the system is.”
Plans Regarding Mid-Season Friendlies
Amorim confirmed plans to arrange high-revenue mid-season friendlies to help boost funds lost by not qualifying for European competition. “We must organize these as we anticipated when we miss European football,” he explained. “We have our fans and our budget and we want to be with our fans around the world.”
Tribute for Synagogue Attack
Manchester United will observe a moment of silence this weekend and the players sporting black armbands in respect following the tragic incident at a synagogue earlier this week. Manchester City will also pay respects during their Premier League and Women’s Super League matches over the coming days.
